Clare la Beguine, cousin to Katharine du Boys, is the daughter of a struggling merchant. With neither the dowry to join a convent nor a suitable prospect for marriage, Clare joined a beguinage where she was educated and lived a pious life.
Katherine's marriage opened a place for her in Sir Geoffrey's household. She regularly helps Father Barnard in clerical matters and assists Mistress Alys with her leechcraft. |
