Alys Coventre is the daughter and widow of London merchants. Widowed by the plague in 1381, Alice chose to enter Dame Joan's household to escape the likelihood of a second marriage to one of her husband's apprentices. She has dower lands near Southampton and is an entirely ordinary member of the middle class. She serves as a companion to Dame Joan, who values her skills as a needlewoman and as a leech. |
