Gilbert Mercer is one of Sir Geoffrey's tenants, the son of a leatherworker.
On the whole, he would rather be back home, but there has always been a Mercer in the Peel household, and Gilbert is a dutiful fellow. Through his honesty and diligence (and some fortunate vacancies) has come to be Sir Geoffrey's captain of archers. |
